Ramsey local beats the odds to be declared 2nd runner up of celebrated industry competition

21th September, 2011

In May of this year, Simon Bottomley expressed his elation at winning a place at the RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final, stating: “I thought it was a joke when I was announced as a grand finalist!” However, the joy he felt on that day has been greatly surpassed, as on Friday 16th September Simon was announced as the second runner up at the RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final, winning £1000 worth of shopping vouchers.

Simon, who hails from Ramsey, Isle of Man, joined the other 9 finalists at the Grand Final at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, all of whom were eager to win the coveted title of Operator of the Year. The Grand Final followed the same format as the Nationals Finals, in that the competitors were unaware of what the 8 final tests would entail. Sporting a fun and vibrant fairground theme throughout, RTITB provided a series of lift truck challenges that were designed to surprise and challenge Simon and the other competitors. With imaginatively named tests including ‘Hook a Duck’, ‘Helter Skelter’ and ‘Crazy Ghoul Dual’, the tests also utilised a series of attachments including a carpet boom, double pallet handler and a clamp, all provided by B&B attachments.

The 8 tests, designed by Simon Docherty, Technical Development & Standards Delivery Manager at RTITB, tested each of the competitors’ skill and overall knowledge of lift truck operation with a combination of challenges. The overall design and layout of the final amazed competitors and guests alike, all of whom were highly impressed by what the RTITB team had achieved.

Commenting on the challenges at the final Simon said: “You couldn’t have imagined that the tests would be what they were on the day – it takes someone with a good sense of humour and great imagination to design something of that level.” Simon, who was trained by Richard Birchall from Manx Industrial Training Services in Santon, and works for Nasaleze, based in Ramsey, also commented on how the final tested his skills on a level that differs to his everyday role: “On the whole the challenges were really good although I didn’t expect them to be designed to the scale that they were. The tests required us to do things that you wouldn’t do in everyday operation but I enjoyed them all.”

Simon’s trainer, Richard, was extremely happy with the outcome saying: “I am delighted with Simon’s achievement - he was very highly motivated and his commitment has paid off.” Of the tests themselves, Richard said: “RTITB cleverly constructed the challenges meaning that no-one would have an advantage as competitors could not have prepared for what they were going to face. I expected something unusual from RTITB and I knew the tests would be designed to a high standard but the funfair challenges by far exceeded mine and everybody else’s expectations.”

Simon was recognised throughout the competition for his competitive spirit and high level of enthusiasm. However, being announced as the second runner up at the Grand Final came as a great shock, as he was suffering the aftermath of ankle surgery completed a few months previously. On being announced as a runner up Simon said: “I was shocked due to the disability I have at the moment, especially as I thought it would make it harder for me to complete each task. I did think however, that Gary was a deserving winner.” He was also extremely pleased to win the runner up prize of £1000 worth of shopping vouchers, stating: “It’s worked out perfectly for me and my wife – the £1000 will make for a great Christmas this year and I’m looking forward to spoiling my kids.”

On the day Gary Maher who was trained by and is employed by TNT Express Services UK & Ireland was crowned as the RTITB Operator of the Year and is now the proud owner of a brand new Toyota Aygo Ice, whilst Colin Price who was trained by AES Training Services and is employed by Cables to Go was announced as the first runner up and received £2000 of holiday vouchers.

The Operator of the Year competition, now in its second year, has been widely acknowledged by the industry as a great way for lift truck operators like Simon to showcase their skills, whilst also being acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to operating safely and correctly. The 2011 competition has greatly surpassed the standard set by the original competition and Simon is confident that the competition will continue to grow: “The competition this year was at such a high standard and I know that the 2013 competition will be bigger and better – I’m hoping that other companies within the industry will work with RTITB to highlight the importance of safety and training.” Although the competition is now over, Simon’s competitive spirit remains and speaking of the next competition he said: “I’m definitely going to re-enter next time – and I’m going to win that car!”

Telford local is declared runner up of nationwide industry competition

21th September, 2011

Following his performance at the Midlands and Southern England National Final back in June of this year, Colin Price, from Randlay, Telford, expressed his elation at securing a place at the Grand Final of the RTITB Operator of the Year competition 2011, saying: “I was very surprised and am absolutely chuffed to have qualified for the next round.” On Friday 16th September, Colin’s performance exceeded even his own expectations, when he was announced as the first runner up at the Grand Final, winning £2000 worth of holiday vouchers.

The Operator of the Year competition was established in 2008, giving lift truck operators, their employers and their trainers the opportunity to showcase the importance of excellent operating skills and proper training. The 2011 competition started with a bang, with over 105,000 qualified operators eligible to enter. Following the completion of an online hazard perception and theory test, 12 finalists per region were invited to compete in their respective National Finals for the chance to win a place at the Grand Final.

The ten finalists, all of whom possessed different levels of experience in lift truck operation, were welcomed at RTITB’s headquarters in Halesfield on the day of the final. Although Colin, who works at Cables to Go in Hortonwood and was trained by AES Training Services Ltd in Newport, has worked as an operator for over 22 years, he admitted that he was not feeling overly confident throughout the duration of the day: “I have a negative approach to everything that I do so that I don’t get disheartened and I kept that mentality all day. However, as we were unable to watch the other competitors in action, it meant I was only able to track my own mistakes and just focus on myself.”

The final required each of the operators to complete a series of 8 tests; 5 practical, 2 static and 1 theory. In keeping with RTITB’s mission to make the 2011 competition bigger and better than its predecessor, each test was provided with a fairground inspired name (names including ‘Hook a Duck’, ‘Pre-Use Pandemonium’ and ‘Smash ‘Em Alley’) and decoration, helping to make each test enjoyable, eye catching and in many ways, memorable for the competitors. Making the final more challenging than the Nationals, the 8 tests utilised a range of attachments, courtesy of B&B Attachments, including a carpet boom and a double pallet handler.

Commenting on the tests, Colin said: “Simon Docherty (Technical Development & Standards Delivery Manager at RTITB) truly excelled himself with the test designs. I thought that the competition would simply consist of moving a pallet from A to B - never did I imagine it would be at the scale that it was. The overall execution of the day was amazing.” Colin’s trainer, Dot Bailey from AES Training Services Ltd also commented, saying: “The competition was fantastic – the tests were more difficult than we expected and the competitors were definitely put through their paces. For Colin to be declared as the first runner up is a great achievement.”

The competition, now in its second year, has been widely celebrated by those within the industry as an innovative way in which to set the standard within the field of material handling. The growing popularity of the competition was evident by the volume of applicants received this year, with Colin being just one of the thousands of qualified counterbalance operators who applied. Other applicants included 2008 re-entrant Gary Maher, from Jarrow, who was awarded first place and a brand new Toyota Aygo Ice; and Simon Bottomley from Isle of Man, who was awarded second runner up, winning £1000 worth of shopping vouchers.

Although he was pipped to the title by the new champion, Colin has not been deterred: “Gary is a deserving champion and without a doubt I will re-enter for the 2013 competition. I’ll also be encouraging other operators to do the same as it’s a great experience to have, it will definitely be one that I’ll remember for a long time to come.”

Local man’s perseverance pays off as he’s crowned champion

20th September, 2011

When announced as the Northern England champion of the Operator of the Year 2011 competition back in April, Jarrow local, Gary Maher declared that he would do all that he could to win stating: “I have most definitely got my eyes on the prize. As long as I stay calm on the day, anything is possible.” On Friday 16th September, Gary was true to his word as he was declared Operator of the Year, winning the coveted title and a brand new Toyota Aygo Ice in the process.

After months of anticipation the Grand Final finally took place, welcoming all 10 Grand Finalists to the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire. Each competitor was required to complete a series of tests, consisting of 5 practical, 2 static and 1 theory test, with the total amount of penalties accumulated determining where each operator would place.

Designed with a fairground theme throughout, the RTITB warehouse played host to imaginatively named tests which were elaborately and colourfully decorated. Facing tests including ‘Pre-Use Pandemonium’ and ‘Carousel Conundrum’, Gary, along with the other 9 competitors, were tested on their skill and overall knowledge of lift truck operation over the course of the day. Of the innovative 8 tests, designed by Simon Doherty, Technical Development & Standards Delivery Manager at RTITB, Gary, who is married with 3 children, said: “All of the tests were really fun, in part thanks to the fun names and the way in which they were displayed. Although they were challenging, they were thoroughly enjoyable.” Gary competed in the original competition held in 2008, meaning he had already experienced some of what the competition entailed, but unfortunately failed to place in the top three.

Nevertheless, his achievement on Friday proves how hard work, determination and dedication to operating the correct way can really make a difference. When asked what he did differently this time around Gary said: “I didn’t let the pressure get to me this time. If I did something wrong, that was it – I just moved on to the next test, but I knew I had to drive better than I did before.”

Comparing Friday’s final to the earlier competition, Gary said: “I felt that the tests were 10 times harder than in 2008. When I initially saw the tests I knew that they were much harder than before. It just amazes me what you can do with a lift truck.” What is more astounding is that unlike some of the other competitors, Gary, who works for and was trained by TNT Express Services UK & Ireland, does not use lift trucks frequently in his everyday role. Gary has only worked as an operator for 4 years and is a mechanic by trade, which further emphasises the size of his achievement. Dave Copping, TNT’s Operations Learning & Development Manager said of Gary’s win: “Gary’s achievement is absolutely fantastic. The standards in the competition were very high and we are pleased to see a TNT operator win.”

Once announced as Operator of the Year, Gary’s shock was clear to see. Commenting on being declared winner Gary said: “It just hasn’t sunk in yet – it’s quite a strange title to have! I keep asking my wife ‘have we just won a car?!’ It’s all a bit surreal at the moment.”

Winning the competition is a huge achievement as Gary will now be recognised as the best operator across the UK & Ireland. However, it was his determination to keep trying following his participation in 2008 which made him a worthy champion. Dave Copping emphasised this, saying: “Gary demonstrated the excellent standards instilled in all of our lift truck operators. The skill level from all 10 finalists was nothing short of excellent and it was an exceptional performance from Gary, considering operating a lift truck is secondary to his main role as an engineer.”

The 2011 competition has been acknowledged as a great success by those within the industry, showing how RTITB has succeeded in surpassing the already high standard set back in 2008. Simon Harper, Director of Operations at TNT Express Services UK & Ireland, said: “The RTITB Operator of the Year competition was absolutely first class and proved TNT’s decision to co-sponsor the event was the right one. RTITB’s new champion said: “Each year sets the bar for the next competition and from here the competition can only get better and better.”

Fantastic final with funfair frolics draws to a celebrated close

20th September, 2011

After months of preparation, testing, late nights and cups of tea, the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final kicked off on Friday 16th September to great success.

From the 105,000 qualified counterbalance operators eligible to enter, just 10 made it through to the Grand Final, following the completion of their respective National Finals. In order to fully test the skill and nerve of the competitors, the final consisted of 8 tests; 5 practical, 2 static and 1 theory and in keeping with the structure of the National Finals, the specifications of each test were kept hidden from the competitors until the big day.

Featuring a bold and vibrant fairground theme, both the competitors and guests were spoilt for entertainment thanks to the range of games, competitions and of course, the 8 tests. The tests, designed by Simon Doherty, Technical Development & Standards Delivery Manager at RTITB, consisted of a series of fun, challenging and imaginatively named tests, including ‘Helter Skelter’, ‘Crazy Ghoul Dual’ and ‘Hook a Duck’. RTITB also utilised a range of attachments including a carpet boom, double pallet handler, and clamp attachment provided by B&B attachments.

Although each of the competitors enjoyed the light atmosphere the theme provided, the importance of the competition to them was clear to see throughout the day as they put everything they had into each test.

Following the day’s events, Jane Willis, Director of Cross-cutting Interventions Directorate of the Health & Safety Executive gave a speech stressing the importance of correct and safe operation, citing just how pivotal the competition is to the industry, before announcing Gary Maher from Jarrow as the 2011 champion. Along with winning the title of Operator of the Year, Gary was also presented with a brand new Toyota Aygo Ice. Gary’s achievement proves the importance of working safely and correctly in the workplace and how the only way to operate is the right way. As a competitor in the original 2008 competition, Gary won a place at the Grand Final but unfortunately failed to place in the top three. However, his determination and dedication paid off when he was announced the winner at Friday’s awards show, held at Telford Golf & Spa hotel.

Commenting on his win, Gary, who is trained and employed by TNT Express Services UK & Ireland, said: “It still hasn’t sunk in yet. I keep turning to my wife and saying ‘have we just won a car?’ It’s all a bit surreal at the moment.” First runner up of the competition was Telford local, Colin Price, trained by AES Training Services Ltd and employed by Cables to Go. Colin was hugely surprised to be announced as a runner up and was awarded with £2000 worth of holiday vouchers. Second runner up was awarded to Simon Bottomley from the Isle of Man. Trained by Manx Industrial Training, and employed by Nazaleze, Simon won £1000 worth of shopping vouchers and amazed everyone with his abilities following ankle surgery a few months ago.

The competition was designed to highlight the importance of properly trained operators within the workplace, and the 2011 competition has greatly surpassed the already high standard set by the original competition. In 2008, Ken Saward from Swansea was declared champion, returning for this year’s Nationals and Grand Final as a guest judge. The day itself saw an attendance of over 150 people, including the competitors’ families, trainers and employers, all of whom were greatly impressed by the level of skill delivered by each of the competitors and have been highly complimentary of what RTITB were able to achieve on the day.

With the competition widely acknowledged as a great success by all in attendance, the only way for the Operator of the Year competition to go from here is onwards and upwards, and RTITB is eager to see how far the competition can go.

2008 Operator of the Year Champion, Ken Saward announced as judge at 2011 Grand Final

4th August, 2011

With the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final just weeks away, each of the 10 competitors will be filled with excitement, anticipation and in some cases, even nerves. One person in particular who will understand exactly how each finalist is feeling is Kenneth Saward, 2008 Operator of the Year Champion, who has recently been chosen as one of the Grand Final judges.

Back in 2008, RTITB launched the first ever Operator of the Year competition which not only allowed operators from across the UK and Ireland to try their hand at winning the title and a brand new car, but also acknowledged the hard work of operators and trainers alike within the industry. Ken, who had worked as an operator for 5 years at the time of the competition, showed great aptitude across 8 tests on his way to being declared the winner. When asked how he felt back in 2008, Ken said: ‘I was very nervous. There was a lot of excitement and the feeling of not knowing what to expect, but I was ready and waiting. I was also trying to get in some driving practice in case I won the car!’

The competition has evolved since 2008, becoming bigger, better and guaranteed to identify RTITB as a strong brand within the transport training industry. Ken has been fortunate enough to have not only been involved in the competition from its inception, but has also been a part of the 2011 event. When asked how he felt about the impending final, to be held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, Ken said: ‘I’m really excited for the final. I was able to judge the National Finals which were a lot of fun, it’s just a shame that I can’t compete myself!’

Having already won the coveted title and grand prize, the 10 grand finalists may look to Ken for some words of wisdom regarding how to win. However, when asked if he had any advice for the competitors Ken said: ‘It’s difficult to give advice as I’m a judge. However, I would say to them to enjoy the day and simply operate the lift truck how you were taught to. Hopefully the competitors have settled their nerves but overall, it’s a fantastic weekend they have ahead of themselves.’

Since its launch in November 2010 at the IMHX Birmingham, the competition has been widely acknowledged as an innovative and fun way in which to help set standards within the materials handling industry. Ken completely agrees with this, stating: ‘Without a doubt I think the competition is great for the industry. It gives drivers recognition for what they do and also gives the people who have trained them a much deserved boost. I just wish that there were more competitions like it.’

The Grand Final, to be held on Friday 16th September, is open to the public who can register their attendance via the RTITB website: www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. Attendees will have a chance to watch all 10 Grand Finalists compete for the title, meet the RTITB team and enjoy the selection of entertainment and refreshments that will be offered throughout the day.

‘I was surprised to gain a place in the final!’ Welsh National Final runner-up Stephen Roberts looks forward to the impending Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final

2nd August, 2011

With the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final just weeks away, all 10 Grand Finalists are filled with excitement, adrenaline and anticipation as they await their chance to be declared champion. One competitor in particular who has been experiencing a year of highs is Stephen Roberts, from Wrexham, who will be celebrating his recent marriage whilst also waiting to compete in the Grand Final.

Of the looming final, Stephen said: ‘I’m very excited! Prior to the National Final I hadn’t been on a fork lift truck for around 18 months, so I was pleasantly surprised to win a place in the Grand Final.’ With just 7 weeks to go, Stephen, along with the other 9 grand finalists, is preparing himself for the big day, to be held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire on 16th September. Concerning his abilities, Stephen said: ‘I’m feeling fairly optimistic for the final. I think I did pretty well in the Nationals, and I’d be pleased to win at least 2nd place. The 2nd prize (£2000 worth of holiday vouchers) will do nicely for my honeymoon!’

With just 2 years working as an operator under his belt, Stephen may not possess the same amount of experience as some of the other competitors. However, Stephen’s level of skill was evident as he was announced as the first runner-up of the Welsh National Final, back in June. Stephen, who was trained by Gatewen Training Ltd, has displayed a great deal of perseverance and determination, which helped him win his place at the final. When asked about his preparation for the event, Stephen said: ‘I haven’t done any as yet, but I’ve asked my boss about doing some at work at some point. I’m also aiming to contact my trainers at Gatewen to get a copy of their ‘bible’ so I can get some thorough revision done!’

Stephen was made aware of the competition via the promotional postcards that were distributed by RTITB to thousands of counterbalance operators across the UK and Ireland. He stated that he applied due to the level of satisfaction he experienced from his training and through the overall enjoyment he gains from fork lift operation. The competition is the first of its kind and has been praised by those within the logistics industry. Stephen stated that he would highly recommend the competition to other operators: ‘I would definitely urge other operators to apply for the competition. Not only were the National Finals a great experience, but they were well planned and prepared. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my experience so far.’

The Grand Final daytime event is open to the public who can register their attendance via the RTITB website at: www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. The event is not only a great chance to see some of the best operators from the UK and Ireland in action, but it also presents an opportunity for the public to meet the RTITB team and enjoy the range of activities that will be held throughout the day.

‘I’m a Leo - naturally I’m feeling confident!’ Telford local Colin Price looks forward to impending RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final 2011

27th July, 2011

When first announced as the runner-up of the Midlands and South National Finals back in June of this year, Colin Price, from Telford, Shropshire, expressed his joy at being told he would also be competing in the Operator of the Year Grand Final, stating: ‘I was very surprised and am absolutely chuffed to have been selected for the final.’

With the final just weeks away, Colin, much like the other 9 Grand Finalists, is eager for the competition to commence although unlike some, may be taking it all in his stride: ‘I haven’t really thought about it much recently, but I am very much looking forward to it. All of my friends and family have been asking me lots of questions about it.’

Colin, who has been an operator for 22 years and currently works at Cables to Go, Telford, displayed his skill and expertise in fork lift truck operation in the National Finals, held at TNT Express Services UK & Ireland in Tamworth, which enabled him to sail into the Grand Final. He divulged that he was yet to complete any form of preparation ahead of the big day, to be held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, but that it was very much on the agenda: ‘I don’t have access to a forklift truck at work that will allow me to practice. However, I want to try and practice ahead of the final and hope that soon I can get my nose in a book and my feet on a truck!’

The Grand Final will call for all 10 finalists to complete a series of 8 tests. Similar to the National Finals, the competitors will be unaware of the details of each test until the morning of the final. Like the other competitors, Colin may have been surprised to have been announced as a finalist, but the surprise has not stopped him from growing a competitive spirit. When asked how he felt about his abilities as an operator ahead of the final, Colin, who was trained by AES Training Services, joked: ‘I’m a Leo so naturally, I’m confident!’

The competition, which is now in its second year, has been celebrated by those within the industry as an innovative way in which to help set the standards within the field of material handling. The growing popularity of the competition has been evidenced by the sheer volume of applicants received this year, with Colin being one of thousands of qualified counterbalance operators who applied, all hoping to win the title of Operator of the Year. Upon being asked whether he would recommend the competition to other operators within the industry, Colin simply said: ‘Without a shadow of a doubt. Not only is the competition a great thing to participate in, but the grand prizes are incredibly generous.’

The Grand Final, to be held on 16th September, is open to the public who can register their attendance via the RTITB website at: www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. Not only does the day pose an opportunity to watch some of the best operators from across the UK and Ireland, but it also provides the public with a chance to meet the RTITB team and enjoy the array of competitions, entertainment and refreshments that will be on offer throughout the day.

‘I should be coming home from the final with a brand new car!’ Midlands & South National Champion, John Lawson Jnr prepares for the Operator of the Year Grand Final 2011

26th July, 2011

Just one month ago, Midlands and South National finalist, John Lawson Jnr, was celebrating his win after being crowned champion, stating: ‘It’s absolutely fabulous that I’ve got through. I’m really looking forward to the final.’ With the heavily anticipated Grand Final just under two months away, John, from Nuneaton, is joining the other 9 finalists in preparing for his chance to be declared Operator of the Year 2011.

Back in June of this year, John, who is employed and trained by TNT Fashion Group, Lutterworth, impressed the judges with his skill and expertise in fork lift truck operation, beating 11 qualified and experienced lift truck operators from across the Midlands and South. The event, hosted by TNT Express Services UK & Ireland in Tamworth, saw all 12 National Finalists complete a range of tests including two practical tests (The BBC and The Platinum Ring) and a pre-use check. The operator with the least amount of penalties for all tests was declared the winner, earning a direct place in the Grand Final.

In keeping with the structure of the National Finals, the competitors will be unaware of what the 8 different Grand Final tests will entail. As a result, some competitors may have opted to steer away from excessive preparation, as is the case with John. When asked about his preparation for the final, John said: ‘I’ve not had a chance to do any practice yet, but I’m planning on doing some refresher training a few days before the final.’ However, although John is planning to complete some level of preparation before the big day, he is aware of the negative aspects of being over-prepared: ‘I’m not planning on practicing excessively as firstly, I don’t know what the tests will involve and secondly, I don’t want to pick up any bad habits.’

As a competitor in the last of the National Finals, John may hold a slight advantage over the other competitors as aspects of the Nationals may still be fresh in his mind. John is honest in stating that as yet he is not nervous about the final, to be held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire, saying: ‘I really can’t wait for the final, I’m feeling pretty confident at the moment - I should be coming home with a new car if I’m lucky!’

John was one of thousands of qualified counterbalance operators from across the UK and Ireland who applied to participate in the competition, including Midlands and South runner-up, Colin Price, from Telford. The competition, now in its second year, has been praised as a way in which to set the standards within the material handling industry. John agrees with this positive feedback saying: ‘I would definitely recommend the competition to other operators. Although I was scared at first, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I met some great people and there was a good atmosphere overall.’

John will join the other 9 Grand Finalists on 16th September, all of whom will compete for a brand new car and the title of Operator of the Year 2011. The Grand Final event is open to the public who, along with the chance to watch some of the best lift truck operators from across the UK and Ireland in action, will also have an opportunity to meet The RTITB team and enjoy the array of games, competitions and refreshments that will be on offer. To register attendance at the final, visit the RTITB website at: www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition

‘Wow, I’m in the final!’ Welsh National Champion, John Thomas is ready for his chance to be crowned the RTITB Operator of the Year

25th July,2011

When asked for his thoughts on progressing through to the Grand Final following his announcement as the Welsh National Champion, John Thomas stated: ‘I’m very nervous…I’m hopeful, no, I’m adamant that I will win- I want that car!’ With less than two months to go until the final, John, along with the other 9 grand finalists, is in preparation for the big final, to be held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire on 16th September.

With over 15 years of experience in lift truck operation, John, who is employed by TESCO PLC, may hold a slight advantage over some of his fellow finalists. Of his win as Welsh National Final Champion back in June, John said: ‘It’s like, wow! I’m in the final! But then I’ve got to go to work and wait for the day to arrive. Above all though, I am excited for the final.’ John, who was trained by I.T.S UK Ltd, said that he was yet to do any practice ahead of the competition, but that this was not necessarily a negative thing: ‘My trainers have offered me the chance to practice for a few hours which is beneficial as I don’t operate lift trucks much in my day-to-day role.’ However, John is still confident in his skills and experience in lift truck operation: ‘I’m hoping that my abilities are good enough to win. I don’t change the way that I drive a truck so I won’t pick up any bad habits.’

Throughout the National Finals, each competitor was required to complete two practical tests (The BBC and The Platinum Ring), a pre-use check and a theory test. The operator with the least amount of penalties was then acknowledged as the regional champion. Similar to the National Finals, the competitors will be unaware of the details of each test until the morning of the competition. When asked about his thoughts on winning the Welsh National Final John said: ‘I just did what I do and operated the fork lift how I always have’, which is a tactic he will be applying throughout each of the tests within the final.

John was made aware of the competition via the promotional postcards that were distributed by RTITB to thousands of counterbalance operators across the UK and Ireland. The competition is the first of its kind and has been praised by those within the logistics industry. John stated that he would definitely recommend the competition to other operators: ‘The tests we were set were really interesting and overall, the competition is a great way to tone your abilities as a lift truck operator.’

The Grand Final daytime event is open to the public who can register their attendance via the RTITB website at: www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. The event is not only a great chance to see some of the best operators from the UK and Ireland in action, but it also poses an opportunity for the public to meet the RTITB team and partake in the range of entertainment that will be held throughout the day.

‘I’m going to do the best that I can!’ Brendan Meagher is ready for his time to shine at the RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final

22nd July, 2011

When announced as runner-up of the RTITB Irish National Final back in May of this year, Brendan Meagher, of Portarlington, County Laois, expressed his joy at winning a place in the Grand Final, stating: ‘I’m looking forward to the grand final. I’d like to say I want to win, but I don’t want to jinx it!’

With just a short time to go until the big day, Brendan is preparing himself for the final, although he divulged: ‘I’m feeling more nervous as the days go on, but I’m excited as well. I’m definitely looking forward to it.’ Brendan will join the other 9 grand finalists (including Irish National Final champion, Samuel Millar) all of whom will be required to complete a series of 8 tests in order to win the grand prize of a brand new car and the title of Operator of the Year 2011.

As Brendan’s role at Glanbia PLC does not include the regular operation of forklift trucks, he was honest in stating that as yet, he had not completed any practice for the final, although some form of practise with his trainers, Jungheinrich, is definitely in his future plans: ‘Jungheinrich have offered me an opportunity to go down and practise with their lift trucks, so I will get some preparation completed in the run-up to the final.’ Although he may not possess the same level of knowledge as some of the more experienced operators in the competition, Brendan’s hard work and ability to learn the fundamentals of lift truck operation in quick succession was apparent as he was declared the first runner-up of the Irish National Finals, earning him a well deserved spot as a grand finalist. Regarding his experience as an operator Brendan said: ‘I was unaware of certain aspects of the forklift, but I’m feeling better and more confident for the final. I’m just going to do the best that I can.’

The competition, which was first established in 2008, has been celebrated by those within the industry as a fun and innovative way in which to help set the standards within the material handling industry. Not only has it proven to be a great way in which to celebrate skilled and dedicated operators like Brendan, but it has also been acknowledged as a positive reminder of the importance of correct health and safety procedures.

‘I know what I need to do to win’ Irish National Final Champion Samuel Millar is ready to fight for the Operator of the Year crown

19th July, 2011

When crowned champion of the Operator of the Year 2011 Irish National Final back in May of this year, Samuel Millar, of Ballymena, expressed his sheer delight at his win stating: I’m really looking forward to the Grand Final and I’m hoping to do well.’ With just two months to go until the big final, to be held on 16th September at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire; Samuel, like the other 9 Grand Finalists, is getting ready for the big day where he will have a chance to shine and an opportunity to win the coveted title of Operator of the Year.

Of the looming final Samuel said: ‘I’m excited for the big day and really looking forward to the challenge.’ Details of the 8 tests the competitors will be expected to complete have been kept a secret from the finalists, with the details to be revealed on the morning of the final. Although he is unaware of what’s to come, Samuel is still feeling positive about his abilities: ‘I’m feeling confident in the sense that I’ve done some minor practise. I’m just going to give it my best go. I’m not by any means saying I’m going to win it, just that I’m confident in what I need to do.’

With no knowledge of what’s to come and potentially a minor recollection of what the tasks entailed at the Irish National Final which was hosted by Daralinn Training Ltd in Blanchardstown, Dublin, Samuel is aware that he cannot prepare for the unexpected, but on preparing for the Grand Final said: ‘I’ve not done any additional practise as such, I’ve just been adhering to the correct health and safety procedures that I must follow in my day-to-day job. I don’t want to over-prepare, I just want to make it as difficult as possible for everyone else!’

With 6 years experience in lift truck operation, Samuel, who was trained by Woodhill Training Services, has been extremely complementary of the Operator of the Year competition, which is currently in it’s second year, stating: ‘It was very well organised and enjoyable. I also found it extremely useful for my development with health and safety practise when operating fork lift trucks.’ When asked if he would recommend the competition to other operators within industry Samuel said: ‘Definitely! It gives you credit as a lift truck operator. It’s a lot of fun, a good day out and a great way to meet some new and interesting people.’

Samuel will be joined by Irish National Final runner-up, Brendan Meagher of Portarlington, County Laois. The Grand Final daytime event is open to the public who can register their attendance via the RTITB website, www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. Attendees will be able to watch all 10 Grand Finalists compete for the chance to win a brand new car, meet the RTITB team and enjoy the selection of entertainment and refreshments that will be offered throughout the day.

‘I had no clue I’d make it this far’ John Wainwright prepares for the RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final

15th July, 2011

With the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final just 2 months away, all 10 Grand Finalists will be filled with excitement, adrenaline and in some cases, potential nerves as they await their chance to be crowned champion. One competitor in particular who has been waiting for the big day to arrive is John Wainwright, from Wirral, who participated in the very first National Final of the competition back in April of this year.

When announced as the first runner-up for the Northern England National Final, held at Toyota Material Handling UK in Castleford, West Yorkshire, John expressed his elation at winning a place at the Grand Final saying: ‘I’m so shocked, I didn’t expect this!’ John, along with 11 other National Finalists including region champion, Gary Maher, was required to complete two practical tests, The BB and The Platinum Ring, along with the successful completion of a pre-use check and a theory test. On being a Grand Finalist John said: ‘I had no clue that I’d get this far. In all honesty, I was shocked that I made it to the National Finals at all!’

Having participated in the first regional final, John has been required to wait longer than other competitors for the all important final, to be held on 16th September at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire. On his feelings about the pending final he said: ‘I’m really looking forward to it. It’s been quite a while since the National Final but I’ve been keeping up-to-date with the run-up to the competition via the official Facebook page.’

Having worked as an operator for 15 years, John holds a wealth of experience and skill in fork lift truck operation. Regarding preparation for the big day, he divulged that he had not done any specific practise, stating: ‘So far I’ve just done basic practise from completing my day to day tasks on the fork lift. I’m aiming to do some in the build-up to the final with my instructor as a refresher.’ Details of the Grand Final testing have been kept secret from the Grand Finalists, similar to the National Finals. However, John sees this as a positive thing in correlation to his practise, or lack thereof, stating: ‘I don’t operate lift trucks all day everyday but I think this is a good advantage as it means I won’t pick up any bad habits ahead of the final.’

John, who is employed by Tata Steel, was made aware of the competition, now in its second year, by the promotional postcards that were distributed by RTITB to thousands of qualified counterbalance operators across the UK and Ireland. The competition is the first of its kind and has been praised by those within the logistics industry. John, who is engaged and expecting his first child in November, is also impressed by the competition, saying that he would gladly recommend it to other operators.

The Grand Final daytime event is open to the public who can register to attend via the RTITB website, www.rtitb.co.uk/fltcompetition. Along with the chance to watch the 10 Grand Finalists complete a series of 8 tests, there will also be a selection of games, entertainment and refreshments on offer throughout the day, as well as the chance to meet the RTITB team.

‘I thought it was a joke when I was announced as a winner!’ Scottish National Finalist, Simon Bottomley, gets ready for the RTITB Operator of the Year Grand Final

13th July,2011

As the first runner up of the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Scottish National Final back in May of this year, Simon Bottomley expressed his joy at winning a place at the Grand Final held at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, stating: ‘I thought it was a joke when I was announced as a grand finalist!’ However, just two months later, the competitor in him is growing and of the looming Grand Final joked: ‘I’m looking forward to driving my new car!’

Simon was one of 12 National Finalists who competed at GTG Training Ltd in Glasgow earlier this year. Completing a series of practical tests followed by a pre-use check and theory test, Simon’s level of expertise and skill in forklift truck operating enabled him to sail through to the Grand Final, along with Scottish National Final champion, Robert Watson.

Simon, of Ramsey in the Isle of Man, has been an operator for 9 years, following his training with Manx Industrial Training Services. Of the pending Grand Final he said: ‘I’m really looking forward to it. I’m not feeling nervous yet, I think that as long as I stay focused, it’ll be ok.’ Similar to the National Finals, the competitors will be unaware of what the Grand Final tasks entail until the final starts at 10am on 16th September. Although some may be afraid of the unknown, Simon is confident in his abilities, stating that although he is unaware of what’s to come, he’s not apprehensive: ‘I’ve done some practise in the run up to the competition, but you can’t really prepare for something you’re unaware of.’

Also strongly confident in his abilities as an operator is Simon’s employer, Mike James of Nasaleze Ltd, who said: ‘We were very pleased for Simon when he won a place in the Grand Final. He really likes to do his best and has worked for us for quite some time.’ Of RTITB’s innovative competition which is now in it’s second year, Mike said: ‘I think the competition is a great thing for industry. It sets a standard that no one else in industry is setting and someone who is willing to set these standards is someone worth referring to.’

Simon was one of hundreds of operators from across the UK and Ireland who entered the competition and completed an online skill test. Following the success of this initial round, Simon was then shortlisted as a Grand Finalist, being placed in the Scottish finals, being a resident of Isle of Man. The competition has been a great way for skilled operators like Simon to apply their knowledge of lift truck operating and provides an opportunity to meet fellow operators and the RTITB team. Simon divulged that he only applied to enter the competition via the online testing stage for ‘a bit of fun’, but said that he would recommend the competition to other operators within the industry: ‘I was really impressed with the level of organisation and precision that had been applied in the structure of the National Final and would definitely recommend it to other forklift truck operators.’

The Grand Final will welcome back all 10 National Finalists who will complete 8 tests in order to be crowed RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 and win the grand prize of a brand new car.

‘I’m not nervous…but I’m excited!’ Scottish National Champion Robert Watson gears up for Operator of the Year Grand Final

12th July, 2011

As the Grand Final creeps closer, Robert Watson is just one of many who is geared up and ready to see if he has what it takes to be crowned champion of the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 competition.

Back in May of this year, Robert, from Ayrshire, expressed his elation at being crowned the Scottish National champion, stating: ‘I’ve never won anything before today and a brand new car (the competition’s grand prize) would be a good start!’ Robert was one of 12 National Finalists who competed at GTG Training Ltd, Glasgow, completing a series of practical tests, a pre-use check and a theory test in order to measure the knowledge and expertise of each competitor. With 15 years experience as an operator, Robert may hold a slight advantage over some of the other Grand Finalists, admitting: ‘As I drive forklift trucks in my everyday role, I’m getting some form of practise everyday so I’ve not had to do any form of preparation as yet for the final.’

Structured in a similar way as the National Finals, the competitors are unaware of what’s in store for them at the Grand Final. Robert was honest in stating he wasn’t overly confident at the National Finals before his win, but of his confidence levels for the Grand Final stated : ‘I don’t know what’s in store, but I think I have the same chance as all the other competitors.’ However, uncertainty is not holding him back and Robert stated that even though he is unaware of what the Grand Final will hold, he is eager for the big day to arrive, stating: ‘I’m not nervous for the final, I’m very excited to see what it will entail.’

Robert, who was trained by John McWhinnie Forklift Training, stated he was impressed with the tasks designed for the National Final, stating: ‘The competition was different to anything I’ve ever done. Although the tests were challenging, they were also fun.’ Robert’s operator experience was clear to all as he was crowned the winner of the Scottish finals, and his employers, bpi.visqueen, are thoroughly proud of his achievement. Paul Cooke, Site Director of bpi.visqueen said: ‘At bpi.visqueen, safety is of the utmost importance and Robert demonstrated this through his practical skill and theoretical knowledge. His success will set a standard to the rest of the operators at our Ardeer site.’

Robert’s trainer, John McWhinnie, was also complimentary of the competition which has been running since 2008, stating: ‘The Scottish National Final was a good mix of skill and knowledge for the operators and was exciting to watch as a spectator.’

The Grand Final, which will take place on 16th September at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire will welcome all 10 Grand Finalists from the UK and Ireland, including Scottish National Final runner-up, Simon Bottomley, from Ramsey in the Isle of Mann.

‘I’ve got My Eyes On the Prize!’: Northern England National Champion, Gary Maher, Is Ready and Waiting For RTITB’s Operator of the Year Competition

6th July, 2011

When crowned as the champion of RTITB’s Northern England National Champion back in April, Gary Maher expressed his shock and elation regarding his win, stating: ‘I was surprised to be crowned champion, but am very glad to have got through to the Grand Final.’

With the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final creeping closer, Gary, like the remaining 9 Grand Finalists, is eager to get stuck in and see if he has what it takes to be crowned champion. As a re-entrant from RTITB’s competition held in 2008, Gary, who was trained by TNT Express Services UK and Ireland, was understandably nervous, stating afterwards: ‘It was a really excellent day, the tests are a little scary at first, but as long as you concentrate, it’s fine. The event was very enjoyable and a lot more relaxed this time around.’ Although he has been trained as an operator for 4 years, Gary, who is married with 3 children, is a mechanic by trade.

Fast forward 3 months later, and Gary is enthusiastic to see what’s in store for the Grand Final to be held at RTITB, Telford, on 16th September: ‘Really excited for the Grand Final. Can’t wait to get started and see what RTITB have in store for us!’

As Gary operates trucks sporadically in his role as an engineer for TNT, he honestly divulged that an opportunity to practise ahead of the final was yet to present itself. However, Gary refuses to see this as a hindrance, stating: ‘This could be a good thing though; it does not allow me to pick up any bad habits. I purely operate the way in which I was taught.’

Gary’s line manager, John Sinclair of TNT, is also optimistic that Gary’s infrequent use of trucks within his day-to-day role will not be of a disadvantage to him during the Grand Final, stating: ‘It’s superb that he’s got through, I’m really over the moon for him. It shows off his skills for other aspects of the business- his level of operation is brilliant.’ Nevertheless, John recognises the advantage of even the smallest amount of practise, saying: ‘I will be giving Gary some time set aside in work hours to practise and familiarise himself with the trucks before he heads down to Telford for the Grand Final.’ John also showed his extreme support for Gary when asked about his attendance to the final, stating: ‘Of course I’m coming along; I can’t wait to come along and support Gary.’

Gary was first notified about the RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 competition once contacted directly from the RTITB events department. Although Gary had entered the competition back in 2008 and unfortunately failed to place within the top 3, he was eager to give it another go and see if this time he had what it takes. However, he remains defiant, saying: ‘I have most definitely got my eyes on the prize, I want to walk away with a brand new car- and as long as I stay calm on the day, anything is possible.’

Competition Entry Closed

3rd Mar, 2011

Competition entry closed on Friday 25th February, hundreds of qualified operators entered the competition and took the online skill test. The greatest number of entries came from the Midlands and Southern England Region.

Since entries closed, RTITB staff have been busy phoning all the shortlisted competitors. The top 12 successful entrants, in each region, (Northern England, Midlands & Southern England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) will compete in their respective National Finals between April and June 2011. The winner and runner up, of each National Final, will go forward to the Grand Final held at RTITB’s headquarters in Shropshire, this will be followed by a gala dinner and awards show at the ‘4 Star’ Telford Golf and Spa, Shropshire on the 16th September 2011.

Laura Nelson, Operations Director at RTITB, says: “Telephoning the successful entrants has been really rewarding, without exception the successful operators have been excited to reach the next stage and keen to demonstrate their skills. I’m looking forward to announcing not only the successful operators to the industry but also the training organisations and employers associated with the operators. Everyone involved hopes the competition will give the industry something positive to focus on over the coming months.”

Given the size of the competition, sponsorship is playing an increasingly vital role. RTITB are pleased to announce that TNT and Toyota have been confirmed as Platinum Sponsors for the event. Both are a natural fit – being safety conscious organisations already accredited by RTITB.

Winning is life changing

The 2008 Competition winner was Kenneth Saward, trained by DLT Training Limited. Kenneth says, “Winning the competition has changed my life and I was thankful for the opportunity to take part, let alone win. It’s a great way to highlight the importance of being safe and for getting the recognition of operating safely and properly.”

“I was self-employed when I won, and facing an uncertain future. In the live heats the challenges were tough but fun and made you pay attention to what you were doing.

“It’s easy for drivers to switch off during their shift, but the tests and the challenges in the Competition encourage you to use what you’ve been taught in your working life, and the standard of the competitors in the ‘live’ stage was very high. Competitions like this are of real value: forklift drivers are needed everywhere and the standard of training needs to be consistent nationwide.”

So who has made it through? Which operators, training organisations and employers are the best of the best? Watch this space: RTITB will be announcing all the National Finalists shortly.
