RTITB Operator of the Year 2011 Grand Final, in association with Toyota Material Handling Services UK and TNT Express services UK & Ireland

Friday 16th September 2011, RTITB Headquarters, Telford

On the 16th September, the second RTITB Operator of the Year competition took place at the RTITB Headquarters in Telford, Shropshire. From the thousands of qualified Counterbalance operators who entered, only 10 could compete in the Grand Final for the chance to win the coveted title.

The entire competition, from the 5 National Finals (Northern England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Midlands & South) right through to the final, provided a fantastic opportunity for the competitors to showcase their skills and knowledge in lift truck operation, whilst also showing their dedication to adhering to correct and safe operating practices. The competition also welcomed back our 2008 champion, Kenneth Saward, who acted as a guest judge throughout the Nationals and the Grand Final. With 8 tests which utilised a series of attachments (courtesy of B&B Attachments), including a clamp, carpet boom and double pallet handler, the competitors were challenged by imaginatively named tests including ‘Crazy Ghoul Dual’ and ‘Helter Skelter’.

Following the day’s events, Jane Willis, Director of Cross-cutting Interventions Directorate for the Health & Safety Executive, delivered a powerful message regarding the importance of correct and safe lift truck operation, whilst also stressing the importance of the competition to today’s industry.

Following this, Gary Maher from Jarrow, a re-entrant from the 2008 competition who works for TNT Express Services UK & Ireland, was announced as the Operator of the Year and was presented with a brand new Toyota Aygo Ice.
First runner up and winner of £2000 worth of holiday vouchers was Colin Price from Telford, who was trained by AES Training Services Ltd.
Finally, second runner up was Simon Bottomley from Isle of Man, who was trained by Manx Industrial Training Services and presented with £1000 worth of shopping vouchers.

The competition was originally designed in order to highlight the importance of correctly trained operators within the industry and acknowledge the hard work of both the operators who adhere to safety procedures and their trainers who have strived to provide excellent and thorough training.

Laura Nelson, Operations Director for RTITB, said: “Each of the grand finalists, the accredited organisations who trained them and their employers should be applauded for their commitment to safety and good practice. They are all perfect examples of how successful lift truck operation, efficiency and safety can be achieved when you do what's right, in the right way and at the right time. Without them it would not have been possible for RTITB to create an event that our industry can be exceptionally proud of.”

This year’s competition has been acknowledged as a great success by all in attendance and RTITB are extremely excited to see what 2013 has in store for the Operator of the Year Competition.

The RTITB Master Driver Consortium

RTITB lift truck courses are now approved for Driver CPC; opening up a whole new market for the training you are delivering on a daily basis.
Many training providers already offer lift truck training that counts towards the 35 hours drivers need for CPC training. If you are not able to offer the same service to your customers there is a chance of losing them to competitors who can.

HSE Stakeholder Meeting on Lift Truck Safety

9th February 2010 - Coventry

RTITB recently attended a stakeholder meeting in Coventry, over 120 interested parties from trade associations, forklift truck suppliers, driver training companies, approved training regulators and businesses came together to discuss the key issues around lift truck safety. The main suggestions raised at the meeting, all of which will now receive further consideration, included:

  • The provision of clearer guidance notes on different types of training (eg refresher training, familiarisation training)
  • Better communication and publicity to raise awareness of the driver training required, particularly addressing small businesses and business start-ups
  • A simple leaflet about forklift trucks for employers (again aimed at small businesses) and lift truck operators
  • More training for managers and supervisors
  • Reminders for employers from equipment suppliers at the point of purchase of their duty to provide adequate training
  • A greater degree of contact and collaboration between accrediting training bodies

Although there were no clear positive outcomes on how to approach European operator/supervisor qualifications, the debate id progressing and further discussion will take place. There was also some support for extending the scope of L117 – the current Approved Code of Practice and guidance relating to forklift operator training – to other types of rider-operated mobile plant.

Further comments and ideas are still welcome. If you have any please send them to workplace.transport@hse.gsi.gov.uk

The meeting was held at the Country Park Inn, and aimed to introduce Master Driver for CPC to Holbrook's customer base and show them the power of the product. RTITB & Sumo Glove National Lift Truck Operator of the Year Competition 2008 – National Final.

Friday 26th September 2008, RTITB, Telford

On the 26th September, The first bi-annual RTITB and Sumo Glove competition took place in Telford, Shropshire. From the 80,000 operators who were invited to take part the top scoring eight competitors in the on-line hazard perception and theory test from each of five regions, competed in practical regional finals held over five days from the 30th June – 4th July in West Bromwich. From that, ten finalists emerged to find out who would be champion.

The National Final was a superb opportunity for the competitors to showcase their skills. With tests including the Sumo Circle and the O’ Linpac flag, the finalists were challenged to the highest level.

Following the day’s competition Kenneth Saward from Swansea was announced National Champion and was presented with a brand new Ford Fiesta car. Jane Willis, HSE’s Director of Strategic Programmes awarded the prize at the gala dinner along with runners up prizes and recognition for all finalists. Second place went to Steven Hall from Coventry who picked up a luxury holiday, and third place went to Daniel Giles from Cambridgeshire, who was also awarded with a holiday.

The competition was designed to highlight the importance of properly trained operators to safety and damage reduction.

RTITB Managing Director Alex Nelson said: “Shropshire is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and is therefore probably the birthplace of the industrial injury. Forklift trucks are potentially lethal in the wrong hands. Something like 7000 injuries are reported each year and this is costing industry £8 million annually, which would pay for a lot of training. However, apart from the serious message we wanted to have some fun.”

All competitors and guests agreed the day was a huge success and Kenneth is already looking forward to defending his title in 2010.

RTITB & Sumo Glove National Lift Truck Operator of the Year Competition 2008 – Regional Finals

Monday 30th June 2008 - Friday 4th July 2008, Barloworld, West Bromwich

In February 2008 RTITB and SUMO Glove announced the first ever National Operator of the Year Competition.

The free to enter competition was open to any counterbalance operators registered on the RTITB National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS)

In order to find the best lift truck operator from the 80,000 on the NORS data base in February, entrants from this already elite group needed to have scored no more than 25 penalty points in their initial practical test and to have scored 90% or more in their theory test, in order to be eligible to go on-line and undertake a hazard perception and theory test. Some 34,000 operators were eligible when this strict criterion was applied.

From the many thousands of operators who were invited to take part the top scoring eight competitors in the on-line hazard perception and theory test from each of five regions, competed in practical regional finals held over five days from the 30th June – 4th July. The practical and theory tests were tough and designed to test the full range of skills and knowledge required by the best lift truck operators representing Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Northern England and Southern England.
