The Instructor Registration Scheme was developed by RTITB to make sure that Large Goods Vehicle and Lift Truck Instructors were professionally qualified by examination to allow them to instruct operatives to a high standard in the elements of competence which are considered vital to accurate job performance.

The RTITB Registration Scheme commenced in 1974 for Large Goods Vehicle and Passenger Carrying Vehicle Instructors and in 1976 for Lift Truck Instructors. Industrial/Commercial Instructors were added to the scheme in 1988. To date, RTITB has examined and registered over 100,000 instructors.

Benefits of Registration

Registered instructors, where applicable, will be able to:

• Obtain a nationally recognised professional qualification
• Demonstrate a proven standard of instructional techniques
• Provide documentary evidence of their achievements
• Provide training for trainee operatives to agreed standards
• Set up, conduct and objectively mark Practical Skills Test(s)
• Issue Certificates of Basic Training to lift truck operators when working non-commercially
• Work for RTITB Accredited Organisations
• Issue certificates through NORS when working through an accredited organisation
• 10% discount offered on RTITB publications and materials
• Receive RTITB Newsletters every three months and any other appropriate updates

The Scheme

Lift Truck Instructors
On completion of an RTITB accredited training course lift truck instructors will have to effectively demonstrate, by examination, their competence and knowledge in the following elements, for registration purposes:

• Lift truck operating skills
• Practical instructional ability
• ‘In-class’ teaching practices
• Associated knowledge

LGV Driving Instructors (JAUPT Approved)
For registration purposes, competence and knowledge will have to be successfully demonstrated, by completion of an examination, in the following elements:

• Driving skills
• In-cab instruction ability
• Demonstration of driving skills with commentary
• In-class teaching techniques
• Assessment of trainee’s driving skills
• Associated knowledge

Driving Assessors (JAUPT Approver)
For registration purposes, Large Goods Vehicle Driving Assessors will have successfully demonstrated, by examination, their competence and knowledge in the following elements:

• Personal driving assessment
• Assessments route selection and directions to drivers
• Driver assessment and report writing
• Associated knowledge

Industrial & Commercial Instructors
For registration purposes, Industrial and Commercial Instructors will have successfully demonstrated, by examination, their competence and knowledge in the following elements:

• Preparing a classroom teaching session
• In-class teaching techniques
• Associated knowledge

How to Apply

• RTITB registration may be applied for once candidates successfully complete all examinations
• Registration is valid for five years from the date of examination
• Registration can be attained through an all inclusive fee of £75
• Renewal of registration is dependant upon successful completion of an RTITB
• Accredited Re-Registration course or by completion of a direct entry examination
