A 7(1:1) or 10 (2:1) day course for experienced LGV drivers who wish to instruct on a commercial basis or to prepare company employees for the driving test and deliver job specific and refresher training. The LGV Instructor course provides interactive guided practice and discussion, whilst progressively preparing delegates to cater for the needs of the learners both in the training room and in-cab. This course is approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT), for Driver CPC.
The Examination consists of 5 elements which are:
- Personal driving assessment (Pass/Referred )
- Associated knowledge examination in the format of a multiple choice theory paper (pass mark 80%)
- A classroom based lesson presentation on a job related subject (pass mark 84 out of a maximum of 140)
- An in-cab lesson presentation (pass mark 67 out of a maximum of 108)
- Demonstration Drive and Commentary (pass mark 38 out of a maximum of 66)
All 5 elements must be successfully completed to achieve an overall pass and qualify as a LGV Driving Instructor.
Successful delegates can then register on the RTITB National Register of Instructors “The Professional Register” for a period of 5 years.
Eligibility
- LGV Drivers who have held their licence for a minimum of 3 years
- LGV Drivers who have sound written and verbal skills

Ratio 2:1 – 10 Days
- RTITB Training Academy - £2610 + VAT per delegate
- On your premises* - £2015 + VAT per delegate (Instructor travel, subsistence and accommodation are not included. Travel is charged at 45p per mile, subsistence and accommodation is charged at cost)
Ratio 1:1 – 7 Days
- RTITB Training Academy - £3654 + VAT
- On your premises* - £2821 + VAT (Instructor travel, subsistence and accommodation are not included. Travel is charged at 45p per mile, subsistence and accommodation is charged at cost)
All bookings include course notes and FREE registration on the RTITB National Register of Industrial and Commercial Instructors (Normally £60+VAT per person)
*Clients nominated premises must meet relevant legislation and safety requirements (subject to written confirmation that facilities and equipment are fit for use and are insured for use by RTITB Tutors)
